Seismological Insights into Heterogeneity Patterns in the Mantle

چکیده

Both geophysical and geochemical techniques contribute to our understanding of the complex nature of the Earth’s mantle, but the two sources of information provide very different viewpoints. Most geophysical evidence provides an instantaneous snapshot of current structure, whilst geochemical evidence has much more information on age. Further, geophysical probes are naturally integrative since they depend on sampling by finite wavelength disturbances. Geochemical probes increasingly concentrate on detailed insitu analysis of small samples so that they are oriented towards highly localized variations in trace elements (or their isotopes). The mantle represents the silicate shell around the metallic core of the Earth, and much of its properties will inevitably have been strongly influenced by the complex process of accretion of the Earth and the segregation of the core (see, e.g., O’Neill and Palme, [1998]). The major features of mantle structure are presented schematically in Figure 1 with indications of the nature of the geophysical and geochemical evidence used to constrain the behavior. Implications of lower-mantle structural heterogeneity for existence and nature of whole-mantle plumes

Recent seismological studies demonstrate the presence of strong deep-mantle elastic heterogeneity and anisotropy, consistent with a dynamic environment having chemical anomalies, phase changes, and partially molten material. The implications for deep-mantle plume genesis are discussed in the light of the seismological findings. Nearly antipodal large low–shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the...

Detection of motion and heterogeneity in Earth’s liquid outer core

[1] The lateral variations in the fluid outer core are believed to be very small from fluid dynamics calculations. Seismological studies on the issue have been limited and controversial. A great challenge is to sort out influences from heterogeneity in the mantle or the inner core. Using high-quality earthquake waveform doublets, we found that waves passing through the fluid core over a few yea...

Glacial isostasy and long-term crustal movements in Fennoscandia with respect to lithospheric and asthenospheric processes and properties-comment

Recently, Morner discussed his model of glacio-isostatic compensation in the light of new seismological models of the upper mantle below Fennoscandia (Miimer, 1990). He concluded that the P-wave velocity distribution is in “full agreement” with his estimate of the viscosity distribution as inferred from glacio-isostatic relaxation. Whereas the consistency of seismological and geodynamical earth...

Static and dynamic support of western United States topography

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Isostatic and dynamic models of Earth's surface topography can provide important insights into the driving processes of tectonic deformation. We analyze these two estimates for the tectonically-active western United States using refined structural models derived from EarthScope USArray. For the crust, use of recent Moho depth measurements and crustal densit...
